JGC Awarded Contract for First Nearshore Floating LNG Plant in Malaysia

JGC Holdings Corporation (Representative Director, Chairman and CEO Masayuki Sato) announced today that JGC Corporation (Representative Director and President Farhan Mujib), which operates the overseas Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) business of the JGC Group, and as the leader of a consortium with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning (EPCC) contract for a nearshore Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility project in Malaysia planned by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), the Malaysian oil and gas company.

This facility will be the first nearshore FLNG in the world as well as the third floating LNG plant to be constructed for offshore gas fields in Malaysia, with a minimum production capacity of 2 million tonnes of LNG per annum and scheduled for completion in 2027. JGC's main responsibilities will cover the engineering, procurement and commissioning work for the FLNG topside, the associated onshore facilities, as well as the management of the overall project. As for the consortium partner, SHI will be responsible for the FLNG hull EPC work and the modular fabrication of the topside.

Since the 1980's, the JGC Group has executed EPC projects for PETRONAS for all nine trains of the LNG plants at the PETRONAS LNG Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, which has an annual production capacity of approximately 29 million tons per annum, and in 2021 the successful completion of PETRONAS' second FLNG facility, PFLNG Dua, the world's first deep-water FLNG facility currently in production.

As a leading global contractor for LNG and Floating LNG projects, the JGC Group also achieved the Mozambique Coral FLNG 1st Cargo in November of this year. The Group's experience includes two other newly-built EPC FLNG projects out of the total of three in operation around the world, and is currently performing the FEED for an FLNG project in Nigeria.

JGC Holdings Corporation Representative Director, President and COO Tadashi Ishizuka said, "We believe that our consortium secured the order for the PETRONAS FLNG facility project on the basis of JGC's world-leading project management capabilities and the company's advanced and proven technologies in LNG plants, accounting for about 30% of LNG plants worldwide, as well as SHI's world-class shipbuilding capabilities in this field. JGC's strong leadership backed by excellent project management know-how has been demonstrated during the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) stage."

Ishizuka went on to say, "It is our sincere wish to continue to contribute to the realization of planned FLNG plants and LNG plants, with LNG positioned as a key energy transition source. In doing so, JGC will leverage its accumulated experience and achievements, founded on an abundance of high-level execution and technical capabilities."

Commissioning of the floating LNG regasification unit delivered by TotalEnergies to Lubmin terminal in Germany

TotalEnergies announces the start-up of the Deutsche Ostsee LNG import terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG). Operated by Deutsche ReGas and located in Lubmin on the German Baltic Sea coast, the site’s official inauguration will take place tomorrow, attended by German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This project, to which TotalEnergies is contributing a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and supplying LNG, will make the Company one of Germany’s main LNG suppliers.

In December 2022, TotalEnergies delivered the Neptune – one of the Company's two floating storage and regasification units) – to Deutsche ReGas. The vessel has an annual regasification capacity of 5 billion cubic meters of gas, enough to cover about 5% of German demand.

Following Deutsche ReGas’s open season procedure, in October 2022, TotalEnergies also contracted regasification capacity of 2.6 billion cubic meters of gas per year and began to deliver LNG from its global integrated portfolio to the Lubmin terminal.

“Europe is facing a historic gas supply crisis caused by the sharp drop in flows from Russia. Since the beginning of this crisis, TotalEnergies has mobilized its LNG portfolio, which is broad and flexible, to send available LNG to Europe and to use its 18 Mt/y regasification capacity. Thanks to the start-up of the Lubmin terminal, TotalEnergies will be able to add to this effort and increase its imports to Europe to over 20 Mt/y, or about 15% of the continent’s regasification capacity. We are pleased to support this project, which will allow Germany and Europe to further secure gas supply,” said Stéphane Michel, President Gas, Renewables & Power at TotalEnergies.

TotalEnergies, the world’s third largest LNG and Europe’s leading regasification player

TotalEnergies is the world’s third largest LNG player with a market share of around 10% and a global portfolio of about 40 Mt/y thanks to its interests in liquefaction plants in all geographies. The Company benefits from an integrated position across the LNG value chain, including production, transportation, access to more than 20 Mt/y of regasification capacity in Europe, trading, and LNG bunkering. TotalEnergies’ ambition is to increase the share of natural gas in its sales mix to 50% by 2030, to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate methane emissions associated with the gas value chain, and to work with local partners to promote the transition from coal to natural gas.

First LNG cargo arrives at Germany's LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven

Today, Uniper brought Germany's first full cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the new LNG terminal, operated by Uniper, in Wilhelmshaven. The LNG ship Maria Energy, owned by Tsakos Energy Navigation, a major energy mover, was loaded in Calcasieu Pass, USA, at the liquefaction facility of the LNG supplier Venture Global Calcasieu Pass, LLC, on December 19, 2022.

The Maria Energy is fully loaded with approx. 170,000 cubic meters LNG (97,147,000 cubic meters of natural gas) – enough to supply around 50,000 German households with energy for one year.

Niek den Hollander, Uniper CCO says: "The successful delivery of the first full LNG cargo to the Uniper terminal in Wilhelmshaven is a testament to the strong partnership between Uniper, Venture Global, and Tsakos Energy Navigation. The use of LNG as a reliable energy source is crucial for the Security of Supply for Germany and Europe. We are committed to contribute our part by bringing more LNG to the European market and especially Germany via the Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel Regas Terminals."

"Venture Global is very proud to supply the first full cargo of LNG ever delivered to Germany, and we congratulate Uniper and the German government for their swift action to build the infrastructure needed to make this historic day possible," says Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel. "As strategic partners, we look forward to providing long-term security of energy supply to our allies through the continued delivery of clean and reliable US LNG."

The LNG cargo delivered on board of the Maria Energy forms part of the commissioning process at the Wilhelmshaven terminal. Commercial operations of the Wilhelmshaven terminal are expected to start in mid-January 2023.

The Uniper LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven was opened on December 17, 2022. Via the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) Höegh Esperanza, about five billion cubic meters of natural gas can be landed in Germany per year.
